MISTAKE 5 // FOCUSING ON THE WRONG THINGS

Hang-ups - we’ve all got them. Even Rihana has days when she wonders if she could do with a few more sequins to cover her bits. But if we let our body insecurities win, we’ll never get going and that’s exactly what we need to do to look and feel better. 

So we know that focusing on the wrong things is just, erm, wrong but how do we turn those thoughts upside down? By being ‘present’. Yes, a mindful approach to exercise allows you to focus on the moment. Follow these 3 simple steps to help you point your focus in the right direction: 

1. Ignore those around you

Focusing on what (or who) is around you is a sure-fire way to start an inner dialogue that goes something like this: ‘Her bum’s smaller than mine…she knows all the moves.. I think she’s looking at me…ooowwccch!’ That last sound, by the way, is you lunging, face-first into the wall. Instead, focus on what you’re doing – she's too busy worrying about her own bum anyway. 

2. Stop clock-watching

Contrary to popular belief, staring at the clock does not make it move faster. By paying attention to the present, the music and how your body moves and feels you’ll find that hour whizzes past. Honest.

3. Be realistic

Yes, it’s good to dream about that gold medal podium moment but it’s what’s happening now that’s going to get you there. Be kind to yourself and set simple and achievable goals. Think along the lines of: Today I’m going to try a new exercise; I’ll buy a five class card for yoga or I’ll do three CrossFit sessions before I decide whether I like it or not.

And finally, put your newly-honed and expertly focused thoughts into words. Try writing an exercise diary after every workout. Note how you feel emotionally, how your body feels and any other notes of real importance like: ‘the instructor’s really cute…’
